Protein questions.

How much protein do I need per day?

It depends on your weight and goal. The bare minimum to avoid deficiency is about 0.8 g per kg of body weight, but most active people do better at 1.2–1.6 g/kg, and 1.6–2.2 g/kg is the sweet spot for losing fat without losing muscle or for building it. For a 75 kg person that is roughly 90 g to 165 g a day.

Is protein calculated from body weight or calories?

This calculator uses body weight, which is how most sports-nutrition guidelines (ISSN, ACSM) frame protein needs — grams per kilogram. It is more reliable than a flat percentage of calories because the same percentage means very different amounts depending on how much you eat.

Can I eat too much protein?

For healthy people, intakes up to about 2 g per kg per day are well tolerated, and even higher in the short term. Very high intakes are usually just unnecessary rather than harmful. If you have kidney disease or another medical condition, talk to your doctor before raising protein significantly.

Does it matter when I eat protein?

Total daily protein matters most, but spreading it across 3–5 meals of roughly 20–40 g each maximises muscle-protein synthesis better than loading it all into one meal. That is why this calculator shows a per-meal target alongside the daily total.

Should I use my body weight or goal weight?

For most people, current body weight works well. If you carry a lot of excess fat, basing protein on your target or lean body weight avoids overestimating — fat tissue needs little protein to maintain. When in doubt, aim toward the lower end of the range.
